The Business That Will Make You a Billionaire:How 5 Kenyan Tycoons Became Billionaires With This One Job

Although they come from different backgrounds and have different interests, five Kenyan billionaires have one thing in common: they all made their fortunes in the clearing and forwarding industry. These individuals are Ali Hassan Joho, Bundotich Buzeki, William Kabogo, Harun Mwau, and Sam Mburu.

Ali Hassan Joho, the former Governor of Mombasa, started his career as a hawker of vitumbua. He eventually became a clearing and forwarding agent at the Port of Mombasa, where he earned Ksh6.6 million in his first transaction. He now owns Autoports Freight Terminals Ltd, which recently won a ten-year deal to take over operations of an SGR cargo terminal in Nairobi.

Bundotich Buzeki, who is a gubernatorial aspirant, rose from being a milk hawker in Mombasa to owning Buzeki Enterprises Ltd, a company that handles cargo and generates billions of shillings in revenue. Although the company faced a lawsuit from former employees who were awarded Ksh2.8 million for unfair dismissal, Buzeki remains one of the wealthiest businessmen in Kenya.

Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo is an “International Businessman” involved in the importation of commodities and running a clearing and forwarding company. He has been hard-pressed to explain the source of his political funding, but he has attributed it to his various business ventures.

Harun Mwau, a businessman and former Kilome MP, ran the Pepe Inland Port company for decades. The company was authorized to forward goods to its premises by the state, much like the inland container depot at Embakasi. Mwau began his career as a police officer and participated in the Olympics twice before amassing his wealth.

Sam Mburu, Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika’s husband, is a relatively unknown tycoon who runs Landmark Freight Services, a clearing and forwarding company with anchor shops in China and Mombasa. He started as a soft-drinks distributor in Nakuru before building a life of luxury through his various businesses.

These five individuals serve as examples of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication in the clearing and forwarding industry. While they come from different backgrounds, they have all found success in this field and continue to thrive in their respective businesses.
