During a prize-giving ceremony at Thika High School on Saturday, April 1, Ndindi Nyoro, the Kiharu Member of Parliament, shared his journey from being a librarian and hawker to becoming a two-term MP. Nyoro inspired the students to aim for excellence and shared his story of perseverance and hard work.
Nyoro revealed that while working as a librarian at Kiambugi Secondary School, he earned Ksh3,000, and part of his salary was deducted to repay his school fee arrears. He had accumulated the debt while studying at the same school. During high school, Nyoro had two ambitions: to be wealthy and to be a leader.
As of 2022, MPs in Kenya are entitled to a minimum monthly salary of between Ksh621,250 and Ksh710,000, according to a review by the Salaries Remuneration Commission in July 2022.
Nyoro shared that he mended shoes for his fellow students during his first year of high school and progressed to run the canteen during his second year. He also worked as a hawker during his third year to pay for his school fees because his family could not afford the cost. In his quest for financial stability, Nyoro ran for as many club chairmanships as possible to run the school canteen uninterrupted.
Nyoro’s entrepreneurial side kicked in early, and while studying Bachelor of Arts (Economics) at Kenyatta University between 2005 and 2009, he started a business and wrote a book. He indicated on the last page of the book that he was a student at KU and the future Kiharu MP.
Nyoro encouraged the students to have an open mind while in school and outside and to consider self-employment. He added that becoming a cardiologist did not limit them to working at an established hospital; they could start their own. In conclusion, Nyoro’s journey to success serves as a testament to the power of hard work and determination.
