3men linked to robberies in Eldoret arrested; gun and more than 40 mobile phones recovered

Police authorities in Eldoret, located in Uasin Gishu County, have uncovered a sophisticated collaboration between armed robbers and unscrupulous individuals in business circles, resulting in numerous incidents of residents being targeted and robbed of their belongings.

The most recent occurrence transpired on Sunday, April 7, around 5 pm, when a 50-year-old pedestrian was ambushed along Nandi Road near Skywall Hotel by two assailants riding a motorcycle. One of the perpetrators brandished a firearm, forcibly seizing the victim’s mobile phone, a Samsung A12 model valued at KSh18,000.

According to a report lodged at Naiberi Police Station, the culprits fled towards Annex center following the robbery. Law enforcement authorities swiftly responded, initiating pursuit, and apprehended the suspects near Temple Road as they made their way towards Eldoret town.

In response to this incident, which is part of a recurring pattern of similar crimes in the area, a collaborative effort involving various agencies was organized, spearheaded by the County Criminal Investigations Officer. The objective was to conduct a comprehensive operation to apprehend the suspects and dismantle their networks.

Subsequently, two individuals identified as Michael Wekesa, also known as Simatwa, aged 33, and Dan Derick Simiyu, aged 22, were apprehended at New Safari Guest House in Baharini, Turbo Sub County, where they had been lodging. The security team recovered a cache of items from their hideout, including a revolver pistol without ammunition, sharp knives, assorted mobile SIM cards, smartphones, memory cards, a motorcycle, and various clothing items.

Further investigation led the authorities to Patricia area in Eldoret CBD, where stolen mobile phones were being sold. Forty-seven such devices were recovered, and Bernard Mwangi Maina, aged 33, was arrested in connection with the illegal operation.

Benjamin Mwanthi, the Uasin Gishu County Police Commander, emphasized the disruptive impact caused by these suspects within the town, particularly in Elgon View estate and surrounding areas, and expressed determination to curb their activities.
