A tragic incident unfolded in Kiandegwa village, Mwea West, Kirinyaga County, claiming the life of a 12-year-old boy on Sunday. The boy, whose name has not been disclosed, tragically slipped into a cattle dip, leading to his untimely demise.
Julius Gatere, the assistant chief of Kimuri sub-location, confirmed the heart-wrenching event. According to Gatere, the boy had accompanied his parents to a local church on that fateful Sunday. Shortly after their departure, the news of the boy’s fall into the cattle dip reached the parents through other children who were also present in the church.
Shem Ngari, the boy’s father, expressed profound shock and grief at the sudden loss of his son. The community, shaken by the tragedy, responded with anger, pledging to dismantle the disused cattle dip that had become a hazard in their midst.
The body of the deceased was transported to Mwea Mission Hospital, where it awaits a postmortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.
In light of recent flooding across the country, Gatere urged parents to be extra vigilant in watching over their children. As a precautionary measure, the government has postponed the reopening of schools until the flood situation stabilizes, emphasizing the paramount importance of child safety during this challenging period.
