Scam Alert! DCI cautions Kenyan public over new scam

The DCI has issued a warning to the public about a new type of scammer that has emerged. These fraudsters gain access to people’s accounts and then send messages to their friends and family requesting money. The DCI advises people to verify such requests before sending any money.

In their public notice on April 18, the DCI urged people to be cautious of this scam, which involves the hackers cloning the victim’s phone and soliciting money from their contacts through text messages and WhatsApp. The Governor of Nyamira, Amos Nyaribo, was one such victim of the scam in January.

The DCI advises individuals to take extra precautions before sending money to anyone who sends a random message asking for funds, especially if it is out of character for the person in question. They also encourage people to confirm the legitimacy of the request by contacting the sender directly.

It is essential to stay vigilant against these types of scams and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately. The DCI reminds everyone to be cautious and to stay safe, especially during these challenging times.
