RUTO begins a Sh600 million renovation of GACHAGUA’s house that cost only Sh450 million to construct

President William Ruto’s administration has initiated a comprehensive renovation and enhancement project for the Deputy President’s official residence, commonly known as the ‘Hustlers Mansion.’ This decision was prompted by the current occupant, Rigathi Gachagua, highlighting the deteriorating condition of the residence.

The Budget Implementation Review Report from the Controller of Budget reveals that a substantial amount of Ksh600 million will be allocated for this upgrade. Interestingly, the initial construction of the residence, which only cost taxpayers Ksh450, has raised considerable inquiries due to the significant disparity in costs.

The Controller of Budget, Margaret Nyakang’o, provided a detailed breakdown, indicating that Ksh100 million has already been utilized for essential repairs. The construction project commenced in July of the previous year.

In March of the same year, Gachagua disclosed that he had not yet occupied the Karen residence due to issues such as a leaking roof and malfunctioning equipment. He attributed the neglect to the previous administration under President Uhuru Kenyatta, alleging that it was part of a deliberate plan by the Jubilee administration to penalize President William Ruto during his tenure as the Deputy President. Gachagua also claimed that Ruto had to personally cover utility bills.

However, by May 2023, reports indicated that Gachagua had relocated to the official Karen residence. He has since been using the facility for sub-Cabinet Committee meetings and diplomatic engagements.

Situated on a 10-acre plot in the Karen suburb, the Deputy President’s official residence encompasses a two-storey dwelling, an office, servant quarters, and an expansive swimming pool. Additionally, Ruto had a church constructed at the site in 2019. The entire refurbishment project underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining and improving the official residences of its key officials.
