Purity Wambui: How Ex-House Girl Became A Multi-millionaire Through Mitumba Business

In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, Purity Wambui’s life underwent a profound transformation, evolving from a modest beginning as a domestic worker to the status of a prosperous entrepreneur.

Purity’s journey stands as an inspiration for budding entrepreneurs, illustrating the potency of perseverance, industriousness, and an unshakeable self-belief. This article delves into the extraordinary narrative of Purity’s life, tracing her path from Meru to Nairobi, where she achieved remarkable success.

Purity’s Early Struggles

Hailing from a fractured family in Munithu – Nyaki West Ward, Purity confronted numerous adversities from a tender age. Her parents’ separation and her mother’s involvement in illicit activities left her often alone, necessitating her self-reliance from lower primary school onward. Despite financial constraints, her fervor for education and an aspiration for a brighter future remained undeterred.

Completing her primary education at Kamiti Primary School with a commendable score of 387 out of 700 marks in her KCPE exams, Purity encountered yet another obstacle — a lack of financial means to continue her studies. Undaunted, she initiated the sale of vegetables by the roadside near her grandmother’s residence.

High School

Through relentless efforts, she managed to accumulate Ksh 1,500, which she judiciously utilized to procure essential items for high school. Seeking a sponsor for her high school education, Purity found success when Father Dominic, a Catholic priest, stepped in.

However, even upon entering high school, she faced challenges in acquiring essentials, including a school uniform. Undeterred, she utilized her savings to purchase second-hand clothes for her uniform, a modest pair of shoes, and repurposed her mother’s old box for storage at school. Purity’s academic prowess in high school garnered support from teachers who provided her with essential books for free.

The Journey to Nairobi

Post her secondary education, Purity found herself at a crossroads. With her high school sponsor abroad and her mother unable to support her financially, she stumbled upon a newspaper advertisement for a potential job with a house managers’ agency. Determined to seize the opportunity, she worked on a farm to raise fare for her journey to Nairobi.

Armed with determination and a paper bag containing borrowed clothes, Purity embarked on her journey to Nairobi. Initial experiences in the city were challenging, with the agency lacking immediate job placements. Undeterred, Purity’s persistence led her to spend nights in Muthurwa market, cleaning a motel in exchange for a place to sleep.

The First Steps in Nairobi

Purity’s perseverance eventually secured her employment as a housemaid, allowing her to save Ksh 10,000. In 2002, she made a pivotal decision to join her sister at Gikomba Market, one of Nairobi’s largest open-air markets. Initially aiming to earn money for her education, Purity’s keen business acumen and market insight propelled her beyond her initial aspirations.

Known for offering high-quality products at competitive prices and delivering exceptional customer service, Purity quickly built a loyal clientele, enabling her business to flourish. However, a devastating fire in 2015 resulted in a loss of Ksh 3.5 million in cash and goods.

Despite this setback, Purity refused to succumb to defeat. A supportive friend provided her with an opportunity to restart her business by supplying shoe bales. Leveraging her sales expertise, Purity not only recovered but also transformed her business model from being a B2C seller to operating as a broker. This transition allowed her to stabilize, purchase a plot of land, and achieve greater financial freedom.

Success and Continued Growth

Fueled by unwavering ambition, Purity expanded her horizons by importing full containers of second-hand clothing (mitumba) from the UK, Canada, and China regularly. Her business, Kastevic Mitumba Importers, enabled her to offer a diverse range of clothing options and reach a broader customer base.

In addition to her business success, Purity has developed strong friendships and mentors younger traders without charge. Her employees testify to the invaluable support and guidance she provides, including tips on selling online. Purity Wambui’s journey from adversity to triumph serves as a testament to the transformative power of resilience, hard work, and self-belief.
