Visual artist Catherine Jepkemboi, known as Minicheps, attributes much of her success to the support and encouragement of her partner, an animator. Her journey to prominence began when her partner recognized her passion for photography and suggested she create miniature photographs of herself, helping her stand out in a competitive field.
Initially, Minicheps lacked the necessary equipment and relied on a borrowed camera. However, when the camera was reclaimed by its owner, she was left without any tools. Reflecting on this period, she said, “I always loved taking pictures. My partner Meshak Korir and I would use a borrowed camera, but with time, we saved up and bought our own. That is when I began to take the work I do seriously.”
Despite her dedication, Minicheps’ work went unnoticed for two years. Her breakthrough came on Valentine’s Day in 2021 when one of her visual creations went viral on social media.
Minicheps starts her creative process with photography, collaborating closely with her partner to brainstorm ideas for the final product. “Before the final product comes out, my partner and I sit down and discuss various experiences we have had, as well as ideas. Afterward, we go out to look for affordable objects and items that can be used for the day’s work,” she explained.
The specific software Minicheps uses remains a closely guarded secret, contributing to the uniqueness of her work. Her creativity and distinctive style have attracted major brands like the Coca-Cola Company, Indomie, and Toss detergent, securing her significant projects.
In recognition of her influence and impact as a content creator, Minicheps won the Arts Influencer of the Year award at the 2022 Pulse Influencer Awards, marking her first major accolade in the industry.
