82 YEAR Old Candidate scores 182marks in KCPE Exams

An 82-year-old gentleman named Wilson Kipchumba recently achieved a remarkable feat by scoring 182 marks in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). Affectionately known as ‘Kukaa,’ his educational journey commenced in 1961 when he enrolled in class one at Tomena Primary School in West Pokot County.

Persisting through challenges, Kukaa’s determination propelled him through the early stages of his academic pursuit, culminating in the completion of his class five education in 1965. In 1968, he took a different path and joined the Kenya Police Service, embarking on a distinguished two-decade-long career that spanned various regions, including North Eastern, Kiambu, and Mombasa.

After an industrious tenure in the police force, Kukaa opted for an early retirement and returned home to transition into a new role as a farmer. Reflecting on his journey, he stated, “I worked for so many years in the police force, covering different parts of the country. After coming back home, I decided to be a farmer.”

In 1993, Kukaa found a new opportunity as a driver at Holy Cross Kacheliba High School, where he served for 24 years before retiring. However, with advancing age, he encountered challenges with his eyesight, prompting him to make a bold decision in 2020 to pursue adult education. Despite the hurdles, he attended classes diligently and prepared for the KCPE exams, showcasing an unwavering commitment to lifelong learning.

Explaining his motivation, Kukaa mentioned, “My teacher told me that this year would be the last KCPE year, which is why I decided to register and sit for the exam.” He attributes his success to the foundation laid by the 8-4-4 education system, expressing a strong desire to obtain a KCPE certificate.

Kukaa’s story serves as a powerful testament to the significance of perseverance and continuous learning, breaking the stereotype that age should be a barrier to educational pursuits. In a message to the younger generation, he encouraged them, saying, “I encourage young people to continue with their education. They should not give up. I am happy to have achieved my dreams.”

Hailing from Talau village, Kipchumba sat for the KCPE exams at Makutano Primary School, leaving an indelible mark on the educational landscape. His accomplishment stands as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to pursue education regardless of age or circumstances, highlighting the transformative power of determination.
