Bishop Nathan Ahimbisiwe and Lillian Ahimbisibwe, both from South Ankole Diocese, joyfully walked hand in hand towards the altar in Ntungamo District to renew their wedding vows. Accompanied by an entourage and a lively brass band playing fast tempo hymns, the couple proceeded down the aisle, creating a beautiful and harmonious sight.
Their love story began when they tied the knot at St. James Cathedral Ruharo on May 16, 1998. Recently, they had the honor of hosting the first lady as the chief guest for their special event. The celebration was marked by speeches that commemorated their rich history together.
Bishop Ahimbisibwe reminisced about the time he heard from a chaplain who advised that when you find the one chosen for you by God, there’s no need to delay, and you should proceed with marriage. He prayed earnestly, and when the right time came, he approached Lillian. Initially, she suggested they continue praying, and they embraced this journey of prayer, believing that it would lead them to the right path.
Their paths first crossed at a Christian conference at Kibubura Girls School in 1993. Both were invited to preach, and during their interaction, a seed of connection was planted. Nathan felt a strong conviction that Lillian was the one for him, and he spent five years courting her, building a solid foundation for their relationship before they eventually got married.
Their wedding followed a series of significant events in Nathan’s life, including his ordination, graduation, introduction, and finally, the grand wedding on May 16, 1998. Throughout their courtship and the time leading up to their marriage, they maintained their commitment to abstinence, staying faithful to their beliefs and glorifying God.
The couple faced challenges, with other women making advances towards Nathan, but he remained steadfast and committed to his faith, choosing to walk away from temptation. Their courtship involved meeting at conferences, open hotels, and the beach, where they discussed their future plans and shared precious moments together.
They held their reception at Mbarara High School, where Nathan had previously served as a teacher and later as a chaplain. Their love flourished, and they embarked on a honeymoon in Queen Elizabeth National Park, an area with conflict at the time but still under God’s protection.
God has blessed them with six children, and despite the challenges that affect many couples, such as living apart due to work, the Bishop emphasizes the importance of patience, extra grace, love, and resources in maintaining a strong and lasting marriage.
With the first lady as the chief guest, the couple had a housewarming celebration, during which more than 2,000 people from different backgrounds joined in the festivities, contributing to the joyous occasion. The love and support from their community were greatly appreciated.
Lillian expressed that their 25 years together have been wonderful, even with a few challenges, especially in raising their children. They still cherish each other like newlyweds and find strength in the Gospel.
The event was officiated by Ankole Diocese Bishop Dr. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa, and it was attended by ten other Bishops, adding to the joy and significance of the celebration.
