Stephen Mukangai, a renowned sports commentator and journalist in Kenya, has achieved widespread fame for his work. However, his path to success was not a smooth one, as he had to overcome numerous challenges before landing a coveted position at Standard Media Group.
Born in Namshiya, Malava, Kakamega County, in Western Kenya, Mukangai’s early life was rooted in a rural village. His educational journey began at Namsiya Primary School and continued at the prestigious Ingotse High School in Kakamega County. Post high school, he further honed his journalism skills at the Multimedia University of Kenya.
Upon arriving in Nairobi in 2008 after completing high school, Mukangai faced daunting challenges. Life in the city proved to be a harsh reality, and he found himself without a support system. To make ends meet, he took on odd jobs, including working as a toilet cleaner in the Kibera slums, just to put food on the table and pay rent.
The hardships persisted, leading Mukangai to shift to the construction industry. Engaging in the physically demanding Mjengo job for approximately six months, he faced the harsh unpredictability of the work, sometimes going to bed hungry.
Determined not to succumb to adversity, Mukangai persisted in his pursuit of a better life. He relocated to Mlango Kubwa and took an unconventional approach by visiting the Standard Media Group headquarters uninvited to meet Presenter Hassan Mwana wa Ali. While initial attempts were fruitless, Mukangai’s tenacity eventually paid off when he received a call from Hassan, inviting him for another meeting.
Prepared and determined, Mukangai’s second meeting with Hassan Mwana wa Ali proved successful. This opportunity marked the turning point in his career as he was given the chance to co-host with Ali. Grateful for the life-changing opportunity, Mukangai acknowledges Hassan’s pivotal role in transforming his life.
After securing his position, Mukangai made his debut as a sports commentator during a match between Ulinzi Stars and Red Berets in 2010. His performance validated his worthiness for the role, and Ali assured him of their continued collaboration. Over time, Mukangai continued to enhance his skills, evolving into one of the top sports journalists at Standard Media. His fame grew, accompanied by a notable increase in salary.
Today, Stephen Mukangai enjoys a luxurious lifestyle, with his monthly salary estimated to be between Ksh. 300,000 to 400,000. His journey from a humble beginning as a toilet cleaner in Kibera to becoming a prominent sports commentator exemplifies resilience, determination, and the transformative power of opportunities.
