Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has laid out a bold political agenda, declaring that if he assumes the role of ODM party leader, his first priority will be to pull the party out of the broad‑based government arrangement. Speaking firmly, Babu said ODM must reclaim its independence before charting a clear path toward the 2027 general election.
According to Babu, remaining in a broad‑based government weakens the party’s identity and blurs its role as a true opposition force. He argued that ODM was founded on strong principles of accountability and people‑centered leadership, values he believes are compromised when the party aligns too closely with the ruling establishment. Exiting the arrangement, he said, would allow ODM to reconnect with its base and speak more boldly on national issues.
The outspoken legislator also revealed plans to have ODM field its own presidential candidate in 2027, signaling a desire to reposition the party as a serious standalone contender for power. He maintained that ODM has the structures, support, and history needed to compete at the highest level, provided it makes decisive and courageous political choices now.
Babu Owino’s remarks come amid growing internal debate within ODM over leadership, strategy, and its relationship with the government. His statements have energized supporters while alarming critics, further highlighting deep divisions within the party as it navigates succession politics and prepares for the next election cycle.
