Tanzanian comedian Umar Lahbedi Issa, affectionately known as Mzee wa Mjegeje, has sadly passed away. He gained widespread recognition for his viral catchphrase, ‘Kata Simu, Nipo Site’.

Mzee Mjegeje’s demise occurred while he was undergoing treatment at Mwananyamala Hospital in Dar es Salaam on March 20, 2024. The exact cause of his passing has not yet been disclosed to the public. His manager, Real Jimmy, confirmed the news of his death.

His popularity soared thanks to his iconic phrase, ‘Kata Simu, Nipo Site’, which endeared him to a vast audience across various social media platforms, particularly among netizens in East Africa who delighted in his comedic sketches.

Apart from his online presence, Mzee Mjegeje made appearances in music collaborations with notable artists in Tanzania. Among these collaborations, one noteworthy instance was with the renowned Bongo Flava artist Harmonize, known for his chart-topping hits. Mzee Mjegeje had recently disclosed the compensation he received from the singer, stating, “I was paid Tshs 5 million by Harmonize.”
