ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has been left stunned following claims by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who alleged that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is planning to remove Sifuna from his party and parliamentary leadership positions. According to Cherargei, the changes are expected to take place within the week.
Speaking publicly, Cherargei claimed that ODM intends to strip Sifuna of his position as Secretary General and also remove him from his role as Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate. He further stated that once removed, Sifuna would be “free to join the saboteurs of the broad-based government,” remarks that have ignited intense political debate.
The claims come amid growing tension within ODM and the broader political landscape, especially following the formation of the broad-based government that has drawn both support and criticism from different factions. Sifuna has previously been vocal in expressing his views on governance and accountability, positions that have sometimes put him at odds with leaders aligned to the new political arrangement.
Cherargei’s remarks have attracted mixed reactions, with some leaders dismissing them as speculative and aimed at provoking divisions within ODM. Others see the comments as a reflection of deeper power struggles within Kenya’s political parties as alliances continue to shift.
As of now, ODM has not officially confirmed any plans to remove Sifuna from his positions. Political observers note that if such moves were to happen, they could significantly reshape the party’s leadership and influence dynamics in the Senate. Kenyans are now watching closely to see whether Cherargei’s claims will materialize or remain political rhetoric.
