Martin Kangangi: From hawking cabbages to Owning Murang’a Shuttle

Martin Kangangi Wairimu is the mastermind behind the renowned Murang’a Shuttle Sacco, which operates along the routes connecting Murang’a, Thika, and Nairobi.

In addition to being the brain behind this enterprise, Kangangi holds the position of Chairman within the Sacco. His impressive journey in the world of entrepreneurship is a testament to hard work and perseverance.

Kangangi’s odyssey as an entrepreneur commenced in 1996 when he began his career as a humble cabbage vendor at the bustling Mukuyu market. Over time, he transitioned into a different role, becoming a tout at the Mukuyu stage, where he worked diligently.

During his tenure as a tout, Kangangi’s fascination with the matatu industry began to take root. It wasn’t long before he realized his aspiration of becoming a matatu owner, and two years later, he acquired his first matatu.

Driven by a commitment to provide dependable transportation services, Kangangi embraced the dual roles of matatu owner and tout with unwavering dedication.

In collaboration with five like-minded individuals who shared his vision, they united to establish the now-famous Murang’a Shuttle Sacco. This Sacco has become synonymous with stringent regulation, boasting a distinguished reputation for maintaining well-disciplined and thoroughly trained drivers who prioritize safety and strict adherence to traffic regulations.

Kangangi, when addressing the Sacco’s commitment to safety, stated that the organization conducts regular, unannounced inspections at least three times a month to ensure the safety of passengers.

“All our vehicles undergo periodic inspections to guarantee their roadworthiness. Any drivers found violating traffic regulations are subject to appropriate disciplinary action,” Kangangi affirmed, as reported by KNA.

Kangangi and his dedicated team attribute their remarkable success to various key factors, including offering competitive transportation fares from Murang’a to Nairobi and making their services accessible and affordable to commuters.
