Major General John Omenda Promoted To Lt. General And Appointed Vice Chief Of Defence

Lieutenant General John Mugaravai Omenda has ascended to the esteemed rank of Vice Chief of the Defence Forces (VCDF), marking a significant milestone in his distinguished military career. Formerly at the helm of the Kenya Air Force as its Commander, his wealth of experience and profound expertise now enrich his new role.

Having enlisted in the Kenya Defence Forces, specifically the Kenya Air Force, in February 1987, Brigadier J Omenda swiftly rose through the ranks. Renowned as an adept F5 fighter pilot, he boasts qualifications as a flying instructor, emblematic of his unwavering dedication to excellence.

For over two decades, Kenya’s military leadership succession has been guided by the revered Tonje Rules and the Kenya Defence Forces Act, emphasizing the imperative for the leadership cadre to reflect Kenya’s diverse fabric.

Assuming the position of Vice Chief of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Omenda will serve as the second-in-command to General Charles Muriu Kahariri, now elevated to the prestigious rank of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).

His illustrious career path includes pivotal roles such as Officer Commanding the fighter squadron, Commanding Officer of the Fighter Wing, and Base Commander of Laikipia Air Base, culminating in his tenure as Deputy Kenya Air Force Commander. Beyond his military duties, he finds fulfillment in his familial bonds, being a devoted husband and father of four.

The Tonje Rules, conceived by a former Chief of General Staff (CGS), now designated as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), delineate the rotational principle governing the CDF position among the military branches.

In an official pronouncement, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) underscored Lieutenant General Omenda’s transition from his previous role as the Kenya Air Force Commander to his new mantle as Vice Chief of the Defence Forces.

The untimely demise of Ogolla, occurring during official duties in the strife-ridden North Rift region, sent shockwaves across the nation, marking the first instance of a sitting head of Kenya’s military passing away in office. His departure leaves a void in the established CDF succession framework, unprecedented in its magnitude.
