Several students and staff from Kenyatta University, who sustained critical injuries in a tragic road accident on Monday in Maungu, Voi, have been evacuated for specialized medical care.
In response to the incident, University Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina visited the Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi on Tuesday to assess the condition of those involved in the accident.
Air ambulances were stationed at the Ikanga airstrip in Voi to facilitate the transfer of critically injured patients to other medical facilities.
A portion of the casualties has been transported to Aga Khan University Hospital in Mombasa, while others are scheduled to be relocated to Avenue Hospital and the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Research Hospital in Nairobi. Additionally, the university announced plans to transfer the deceased to KUTRRH in Nairobi.
Prof. Wainaina personally visited the injured students undergoing treatment at the Moi County Referral Hospital.
Furthermore, the university has mobilized a team consisting of doctors, medical personnel, security officers, and wellness officers to provide support in Voi.
The accident, which occurred when a university bus collided with a truck in Maungu, happened as the students and staff were en route to Mombasa for an academic excursion.
As of now, eleven fatalities have been confirmed, with 21 individuals sustaining serious injuries and four with minor injuries.
