Kakamega man burns grandmother to death over (PESA YA WAZEE) elderly cash stipend

Police in Khwisero, Kakamega County, have arrested a 40-year-old man suspected of killing his 89-year-old grandmother and setting her house on fire. According to reports, the suspect had become angry with his grandmother over her refusal to give him her government cash stipend meant for the elderly and vulnerable.

Mary Okiso, the 70-year-old first-born daughter of the deceased, stated that the suspect had demanded to collect the stipend, but his grandmother had refused. This led to the suspect becoming furious and destroying crops, including banana plants, in the grandmother’s compound. Neighbors intervened and locked the suspect in his own house.

It is still unclear how the suspect was able to escape from the house and burn his grandmother to death. Area OCPD Samwel Kogo stated that by the time officers arrived at the scene, the woman had already died. The suspect was rescued by police from angry villagers who had attempted to kill him at the Ebakambuli market.

Kogo blamed family members for failing to protect the elderly woman living with her violent grandson, who is suspected of drug abuse. He also stated that preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect had been using drugs.
