This is exemplified in the plight of Zuhura, a mother of five in Tanzania, who finds herself in a distressing situation after her husband, Mzee Makoti, opted to marry a 23-year-old woman, elevating her to the status of a first wife.
Mzee Makoti utilized the couple’s accumulated wealth to finance this union, providing the new wife with a luxurious mansion and a car—gestures that were conspicuously absent in his treatment of his first wife. When questioned about this decision, Makoti justified it by professing his deep love for the younger woman and expressed a desire to replicate the happiness he had brought to his first wife at the beginning of their marriage.
Although Makoti acknowledged using family resources for the second marriage, he insisted that he still adequately provides for his first wife, implying that she should not complain about the situation. The 23-year-old second wife, seemingly unfazed by the controversy, voiced her admiration for their love and asserted that she cared little about the first wife. She praised Makoti for his caring and amazing qualities, expressing a desire to remain happily married to him as the second wife, despite any objections.
