Why ‘Rieng Genje’ singer Ngesh Bad Gal is still hawking

Mary Wangeci, also known as Ngesh Bad Gal, an emerging sensation in the Gengetone music scene, has opened up about the challenges she’s faced in her journey through the music industry.

Ngesh, as she is affectionately called by her fans, revealed that several individuals who had pledged their support and assistance failed to honor their commitments.

Despite her recent rise to fame, this 22-year-old singer has found herself returning to her street vending activities to make ends meet in the midst of a tough economic climate.

During an interview with Nairobi News, Ngesh Bad Gal shared her incredible journey and the unexpected success of her hit track, “Kaveve Kazoze,” which translates to people consuming miraa.

Ngesh Bad Gal expressed her astonishment at the song’s widespread popularity, as her primary focus had initially been on her street vending business. She had no inkling of her newfound celebrity status until a friend shared a video with her.

She confessed, “I didn’t anticipate my song would take off. I was preoccupied with my business, so when I checked the internet, a friend sent me a video, and that’s how I discovered I was trending.”

This talented artist had even approached fellow musician Ssaru for a collaboration, demonstrating her ambition and desire to collaborate with established artists in the industry.

Despite her determination and undeniable talent, Ngesh Bad Gal emphasized the challenges she has encountered in securing the promised support from those who had pledged to assist her.

“People make grand promises, but they often don’t follow through, which is why I continue street vending,” she lamented. “I’ll continue vending because I can’t rely solely on my brand.”

She completed her secondary education in 2021 and had been engaged in manual labor before venturing into street vending.

Despite the commitments made by others in the industry, she remains dedicated to her vending business, selling sling bags in the bustling Tearoom area of Nairobi.

In just one month since its release, her hit song has garnered over 700,000 views on YouTube, a testament to her rising star in the music industry.
