At least ten people lost their lives on Sunday night in a devastating road accident near Chabera Trading Centre in Rachuonyo East, Homa Bay County. The fatal crash has once again highlighted the dangers on Kenyan roads, particularly during periods of increased travel.
According to police reports, the accident occurred at around 8:00 p.m. along the Oyugis–Katito road when a Nissan matatu ferrying church members collided head-on with a lorry. Investigators revealed that the lorry, which was travelling from Oyugis towards Katito, lost control before veering into the matatu’s lane, leading to the deadly impact.
The victims of the crash included six women and four men, among them the matatu driver. In addition to the fatalities, six other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Rachuonyo South Sub-county Hospital in Oyugis, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
Rachuonyo East Sub-county Police Commander Laban Omol confirmed the incident, noting that the passengers were members of a church from Nyamira County. The group was reportedly returning home after attending a wedding ceremony of one of their congregants in Kakamega County, turning what was meant to be a joyful occasion into a tragic journey.
Police further disclosed that the lorry driver fled the scene immediately after the collision and is now the subject of an active manhunt. Authorities have launched investigations to locate and apprehend the suspect, emphasizing that fleeing the scene of an accident is a serious offence under the law.
“The accident occurred after the lorry driver lost control and crossed into the matatu’s lane. We are actively pursuing the driver who escaped after the collision,” Commander Omol said.
The bodies of the deceased were transferred to Rachuonyo South Sub-county Hospital Mortuary, while both vehicles involved in the crash were towed to Othoro Police Station for inspection as part of ongoing investigations.
In the wake of the tragedy, police have urged motorists to exercise heightened caution on the roads, particularly during the festive season when traffic volumes increase. Authorities emphasized the importance of responsible driving to prevent further loss of life, as families and communities continue to mourn those lost in the tragic accident.
