Shocking! Tesla is losing its Master of Coin

Zachary Kirkhorn has announced his decision to step down from his role as Chief Financial Officer and the whimsically titled “Master of Coin” at Tesla, as revealed in a LinkedIn post. Kirkhorn, who has been an integral part of Tesla for 13 years, with four years spent as CFO, will be succeeded by Vaibhav Taneja, the current Chief Accounting Officer.

Reflecting on his tenure, Kirkhorn expressed his deep connection to the company, emphasizing the pride he takes in the collaborative achievements during his more than a decade-long association. He expressed gratitude towards Tesla’s dedicated and industrious employees, acknowledging their accomplishments that often defied expectations.

Kirkhorn also took a moment to acknowledge Elon Musk, Tesla’s leader, commending Musk’s visionary leadership and unwavering optimism that has inspired countless individuals.

While Kirkhorn did not provide specific reasons for his decision, his departure marks a significant transition for the company.

During his time as CFO, Kirkhorn played a pivotal role in guiding Tesla through challenging periods, notably navigating the complexities following the tumultuous launch of the Tesla Model 3, a phase that posed potential financial peril for the company. His inaugural year as CFO witnessed remarkable sales figures, showcasing Tesla’s profound impact on the electric vehicle landscape.

Under Kirkhorn’s guidance, Tesla achieved a landmark achievement with its first annual profit, and subsequent profitable years solidified the company’s standing as a high-value player in the automotive industry.

The incoming CFO, Vaibhav Taneja, entered Tesla’s fold after the acquisition of SolarCity in 2016, where he had previously held the positions of Vice President of Accounting Operations and Corporate Controller. Taneja’s journey within Tesla has seen him taking on various roles prior to assuming the position of Chief Accounting Officer in March 2019.

Taneja’s appointment and Kirkhorn’s departure signify a notable shift in Tesla’s leadership structure, opening a new chapter for the company as it continues to shape the future of electric vehicles and sustainable transportation.
