The 118 inmates fled Suleja prison in Niger state following severe rain damage to the facility on Wednesday night. Adamu Duza, the prison spokesperson, stated that the heavy downpour caused significant destruction, including breaches in the perimeter wall and surrounding structures.
Duza confirmed on Thursday that law enforcement agencies were actively pursuing the escaped prisoners. So far, 10 individuals have been apprehended with the collaboration of other security forces. Duza emphasized the ongoing efforts to recapture the remaining fugitives, reassuring the public of the authorities’ control over the situation.
While Duza did not disclose the identities or affiliations of the escaped inmates, it’s noted that in the past, members of the Boko Haram Islamist insurgent group have been housed in Suleja prison.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
