Rigathi Gachagua has described his impeachment as a politically motivated act, drawing parallels to the removal of former U.S. President Donald Trump. He contends that, like Trump, he was targeted for standing firm on his principles, particularly regarding faith and morality.
In an interview with CBN News, Gachagua dismissed official claims of corruption and oath-related violations, arguing that these were merely pretexts. He asserted that his “real offense” was resisting directives he believed conflicted with Christian values, pointing to last year’s anti-tax protests where the government allegedly used excessive force against young demonstrators.
“I could not agree to be part of a government that was harming its own youth. I chose to resist, even when ordered otherwise,” he said.
Gachagua also claimed that his life has been under constant threat, alleging six assassination attempts—two during his tenure and four after his impeachment—further reinforcing his belief that his removal was politically, not legally, driven.
While critics insist corruption was the primary reason for his ouster, Gachagua shifted the focus to systemic issues, accusing Kenya’s oversight bodies of failing to check power and highlighting a culture where leaders must often show loyalty to individuals rather than the Constitution.
“Corruption is not the main problem in Kenya. The real issue is weak oversight and blind loyalty,” he emphasized.
Despite these setbacks, the former Deputy President confirmed he remains active in politics, announcing his intention to run in the 2027 presidential election with a commitment to a peaceful campaign anchored in democracy and reform.
“I believe in change through the ballot, not violence. That is the only way to rescue Kenya,” he said.
Gachagua’s 2024 impeachment represented one of the most dramatic upheavals in President Ruto’s administration, paving the way for Kithure Kindiki to assume the Deputy Presidency. As Kenya approaches the 2027 election, Gachagua has emerged as a controversial yet resolute figure, unwilling to retreat quietly.
