In most schools across Kenya, principals are known for their sharp suits and commanding presence, a look that symbolizes authority. However, a few high school heads have taken a different approach by wearing the same uniforms as their students.
For these principals, the choice is not about fashion, but about building trust, motivating learners, and even discouraging indiscipline. By blending in, they not only appear approachable but also use the uniform as a tool to inspire academic excellence and discipline.
Below are some principals in Kenya known for this unique leadership style:
- Wilson Achoko – Barwesa Secondary School, Baringo
Wilson Achoko started wearing the school uniform after realizing students were too intimidated to visit his office. Following a dormitory fire in 2020 that students could have warned him about, he decided to break barriers by dressing like them.
Since then, his open-door policy and approachable nature have seen better results in academics and discipline. Achoko believes that wearing the uniform has helped create a stronger bond with learners.
- Alex Maina Kariuki – Friends School Kamusinga
Alex Maina, now principal of the prestigious Friends School Kamusinga, has always had the tradition of wearing uniform at least twice a week. Even before joining Kamusinga, he used to do the same at Ololaiser High School.
When he arrived at Kamusinga, his style raised eyebrows, and at one point, Bungoma MCAs forcefully ejected him from office. However, Maina insists that the uniform makes him more relatable to students and helps him earn their respect.
- Fred Mogaka – Kisii High School
Fred Mogaka, the principal of Kisii High School, is another strong believer in connecting with students through uniform. He began this practice while serving as deputy principal at Riokindo Boys and carried it forward to Kisii School.
For Mogaka, the uniform is more than just a disguise—it allows him to go undercover, understand student challenges, and curb issues like drug abuse. His leadership has been credited with improving relations between students and teachers, as well as maintaining peace in the school.
