Politician Jaguar, currently enjoying wealth and a comfortable lifestyle, faced significant challenges during his upbringing. In an interview with Muthoni wa Kirumba, the singer reflected on his humble beginnings, revealing that his financial struggles impacted his education.
Jaguar recounted the difficulties he faced in high school, where he discovered the existence of undergarments. Due to a lack of funds, he experienced interruptions in his education, engaging in odd jobs to earn money for school fees. This struggle persisted during his time in Form 3 at Senior Chief Koinange.
“I took on makanga jobs to earn enough money to pay for my fees. Whenever I accumulated sufficient funds, I would return to school. One day, the matatu owner discovered I was a minor and felt sorry for me,” he shared.
Being surrounded by affluent schoolmates added to his challenges. Witnessing their extravagant lifestyles, including Range Rover drop-offs and elaborate birthday parties, made him feel the stark contrast of his own circumstances. He vividly remembered the first time he encountered tissue and learned about the concept of wearing underwear, experiences that unfolded during his Form 3 years.
“I didn’t even want to open my suitcase in front of them. It was a pity. I saw tissue for the first time in that school. I even found out that people wear underwear. I was in Form 3. I just used to wear trousers without anything,” he admitted.
To address his curiosity about underwear, Jaguar humorously revealed that he resorted to stealing a boxer from the clothesline to explore this unfamiliar garment.
“I used to ask the other students why you wear a trouser-boxer under another trouser,” he shared with a laugh.
Despite these challenges, Jaguar’s resilience led him to initiate his music career in high school. He gained recognition in national events and competitions while living in Dandora, sharing a rented house with a friend. Through determination and hard work, he overcame his early struggles to achieve success in both his musical and political endeavors.
