Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has leveled serious accusations against Mr. Githinji, alleging a history of violence targeting children in church settings. Speaking during a public address, Gachagua expressed outrage over incidents involving minors, citing both historical and recent events.
In his statement, Gachagua referenced the 2007/2008 post-election violence, recalling the tragic attack on Kikuyu children and women at Kiambaa Church. He also pointed to an incident when Githinji allegedly deployed tear gas against students along Langata Road while serving in a leadership role, describing the pupils as “defending their land.”
Most recently, Gachagua accused Githinji of sending police officers and thugs to attack children at Kariobangi PCEA Church, questioning the motives behind these repeated actions. In a strong rebuke, he asked:
“Mr. Githinji, what is your obsession with attacking children in the Church of Christ? Is this a ritual or what?”
The remarks have sparked reactions online and among political analysts. Supporters of Gachagua praised his boldness in highlighting perceived abuses, while critics cautioned against politicizing sensitive incidents involving children and churches, emphasizing the need for verified investigations before assigning blame.
Observers note that these accusations, if left unresolved, could escalate tensions in communities, especially given the emotional and historical weight of the events cited. Analysts also warn that conflating historical and recent events without due legal process may complicate the political and social discourse.
As of now, Mr. Githinji has not publicly responded to Gachagua’s accusations. The comments underscore the increasingly heated rhetoric in Kenya’s political landscape, particularly around issues of accountability, community protection, and leadership responsibility.
