Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga has concluded the six-year-long murder trial of former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, who was accused of the brutal murder of university student Sharon Otieno. The case, which has attracted national attention, featured testimonies from a total of 42 witnesses.
Following the trial’s conclusion, Obado’s defense team announced their intention to submit a ‘no case to answer’ bid, arguing that the evidence presented does not implicate Obado in Sharon Otieno’s murder on September 3, 2018. “Your Ladyship, I will be making submissions for no case to answer in favor of Obado, then urge this court to acquit him, since evidence tendered herein exonerates him from the murder,” stated Obado’s lawyer, Kioko Kilukumi, on Friday.
In contrast, prosecution counsels Gikui Gichuhi and Allen Mulama called for the conviction of ex-Governor Obado, his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo, and ex-Migori County employee Caspal Obiero, asserting their guilt in the cold-blooded murder.
The court was presented with evidence indicating that Sharon was driven to her death by at least two of the accused. Additionally, it was confirmed that Sharon was carrying Obado’s baby at the time of her death.
