Peris Njeri’s life took a painful turn in 2009 when a decision she now regrets landed her in Lang’ata Women’s Prison, where she is serving a life sentence.
Her ordeal began when her best friend discovered that her husband was having an affair with another woman.
In anger, the friend planned to get rid of the woman, and Njeri was dragged into the scheme.
She was asked to deliver money, not knowing it was meant to pay hired killers.
According to Njeri, what followed was a nightmare. Instead of targeting the woman, the goons killed her baby, an act that shocked the community and sealed her fate.
She revealed in an interview with Jasiri View that her instincts had told her to take the money to the police, but because it was her friend, she went ahead with the plan and now regrets it every day.
The incident left Njeri’s family shattered. Once the breadwinner, her arrest devastated her mother, who developed ulcers, while her grandmother nearly lost her life from the shock.
She explained that she once had a good business and never lacked, but now her situation has completely changed, something that still breaks her voice with emotion.
Life behind bars has not been easy for Njeri. She tries to mask her pain with makeup and a smile, but deep inside, she admits she is broken.
For 12 years, prison walls have kept her away from her loved ones, her freedom, and the life she once knew.
Her story stands as a grim reminder of how one decision, made out of misplaced loyalty, can destroy everything.
