49 passengers escape death by a whisker as bus is swept by floods

On the morning of Tuesday, April 9, tragedy struck as a APSV bus, operated by Umma Express Bus Company, became engulfed by floodwaters on the Garissa-Nairobi Highway. Carrying 49 passengers, the bus was swept away at Chuma area during heavy rainfall.

According to reports, the driver, Hassan Turbo, made an ill-fated decision to traverse the flooded stretch of the highway. Despite efforts to navigate through the rising waters, the bus skidded off the road and became lodged in a ditch. Subsequently, the relentless current dragged the bus approximately 30 meters away from the highway.

Tana River County Commander Ali Ndiema confirmed the incident, stating that all passengers aboard the bus bound for Nairobi from Garissa had been safely rescued. The successful operation was executed with the assistance of a specialized rescue team comprising members from the Garissa military and the Red Cross.
