Valentine Nekesa gained national recognition in 2017 when she won the “Blaze Be Your Own Boss” competition. She received a total prize of KSh 5 million, including KSh 3 million in capital and KSh 2 million in mentorship, business support, and financial aid.
How Valentine Nekesa Became Part of the Atwoli Family
Valentine was adopted by Francis Atwoli and his wife, Rosalinda, after her mother passed away. Before her adoption, Valentine lived in a large family. Her journey into the Atwoli family marked a new beginning after her mother’s untimely death.
Valentine’s interest in fashion began while she was still in school. She kept a sketchbook with various designs and started her journey in the fashion industry right after completing her KCSE exams in 2014.
“Just after I sat my KCSE in 2014 and was thinking about getting serious with fashion, a friend asked for an outfit. I only had KSh 1,000 with me, which I used to buy fabric at KSh 450 and the tailor charged me KSh 500,” Valentine recalls, as reported by Kenyans.co.ke.
At the age of 17, shortly after finishing high school, Valentine founded her own company, V-Design, also known as Nekesa Queens Ltd. Her efforts and talent were recognized in 2017 when she was listed as number 14 in the “Top 40 Under 40 Women in Kenya.”
