Two Brothers Commit Suicide in Narok After Father Gifts Land to their Stepmother

Residents of Narok County were left reeling after two brothers reportedly took their own lives following a bitter dispute over family land.

The deceased, identified as Vincent Kipkorir Koech, 19, and his younger brother Gilbert Kibet Koech, 17, were found hanging near River Amalo, about one kilometre from their home.

Reports indicate that the brothers were upset after their father, Mzee David Towett, allegedly allocated part of the family land to his first wife, who had recently returned after decades apart. Sources reveal that the brothers had vowed not to let the decision stand, particularly after their stepbrother’s burial took place on the contested land.

Police investigations show that the two had caused a scene during the burial, openly protesting the decision and issuing threats in broad daylight.

Community elders condemned the tragic turn of events, emphasizing how unresolved family disputes can escalate into devastating consequences.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions online, with Kenyans expressing condolences to the family while also reflecting on the tragic consequences of entitlement. One social media user, John Mwaniki, commented:
“Why would you decide to take your life just because your father decided to give someone else a piece of land? This is what we call entitlement. Now they are dead and gone, and the land will remain there forever.”

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths as the community grapples with the heartbreaking loss.
