Shaffie Weru, a media personality who was terminated from Radio Africa’s Homeboyz in March 2021, has revealed how a previous job loss at Citizen TV had a significant impact on his life. Shaffie joined Citizen TV in 1998 as a reporter and producer, with a starting salary of Sh. 50,000 per month, which was a top salary at that time. However, he did not have a clear understanding of his job description and would do whatever he was asked to do. Despite being a producer, he was once put on air to present sports news, and he made several mistakes, which resulted in him losing his job when former President Daniel Moi shut down the station due to a disagreement with S.K. Macharia, the owner of Royal Media Services.
Shaffie admitted that after losing his job, he became idle and turned to alcohol, which eventually led to him becoming an alcoholic. His mother had to ask for help from Carol Radull, who offered him an internship opportunity at Radio Africa. Shaffie rarely stayed at his mother’s house, indulging in alcohol and other substances. He bought a car using the money he had saved while working at Citizen TV, which led his mother to chase him out of the house. The internship lasted for eight months, during which he was eventually hired as a producer.
Despite his reputation as a controversial figure in the entertainment scene, Shaffie made a name for himself and became a celebrity, which led Radio Africa Group’s Managing Director, Patrick Quarcoo, to question how he became famous even though he was not on air. One Monday morning, after going to work with a hangover, Shaffie was surprised to learn that he would be hosting a show that same day. He moved from the afternoon drive show to the breakfast show with Kalekye Mumo before leaving the station after 14 years to become the station manager at Homeboyz Radio, where he was fired in March 2021 after making controversial rape comments.
