Rape Suspect Shot After Attacking Police Officer With A Panga in Siaya County

At Siaya County Referral Hospital, a middle-aged man is recuperating from gunshot wounds sustained during an altercation with law enforcement. Identified as Isaiah Otieno, also known as Otiti, the 35-year-old was shot in the thigh by a police officer after allegedly attacking another officer with a machete.

Siaya County Police Commander, Mr. Cleti Kimaiyo, provided details of the incident. Otieno, a suspect in a rape case reported at Kowet Police Station, was located at Rachuonyo village within Nyamila Sub-location. Officers Chacha Mwita, Wesley Tonui, and Samdon Mandere went to arrest him.

Upon arrival, the officers identified themselves and requested Otieno to surrender. However, Otieno, armed with a machete, confronted the officers at the door. In the ensuing struggle, he struck Officer Mwita on the head with the machete.

In self-defense, Officer Mwita discharged his AK-47 rifle, injuring Otieno in the thigh, preventing his escape. Additional officers intervened, and Otieno was subsequently apprehended and transported to Siaya County Referral Hospital for treatment.
