The detention of the prime suspect in the Starlet Wahu murder case, Mr. John Matara, is set to extend for an additional 14 days to facilitate the conclusion of the ongoing investigation. On Thursday, the 34-year-old Mr. Matara confessed to stabbing Wahu in the leg but refuted allegations of stabbing her in the chest and head. Wahu, the younger sister of Pastor Victor Kanyari, fell victim to the tragic incident.
Martin Korongo, the head of criminal investigations in Makadara sub-county, disclosed that his team had a total of 21 days to detain the main suspect. As of Thursday, there remained a two-week window to comprehensively investigate the case. Mr. Matara is presently confined in a cell at the Industrial Area police station and will be brought to court upon the completion of the investigation.
Furthermore, Mr. Korongo stated that he is awaiting a file from the police chief in the Ruiru crime unit, connecting Mr. Matara to another case involving the forceful theft of money from a different woman. “I am waiting for my colleague from the Ruiru sub-county to bring the file and the sealed report from the CID department in the Njiru area where the suspect Magara is involved in a crime,” explained Mr. Korongo.
Describing Mr. Matara’s demeanor, Mr. Korongo noted that the suspect appears calm, cooperates well, and communicates minimally when in the company of officers. “He is a person who seems calm, composed, and when inside the cell, he doesn’t talk much. He communicates well with us, but he is a very intelligent person,” commented Mr. Korongo.
Elaborating on the second incident, Mr. Korongo highlighted the suspect’s involvement in a crime where he allegedly absconded with a woman’s money through the M-Pesa platform. Following the conclusion of the investigation, both cases, involving murder and robbery using force, will be consolidated for charges against Mr. Matara.
Mr. Matara has acknowledged being ‘married’ and having one child but revealed that he is separated from his wife due to a domestic dispute.
