Nairobi High Court has sentenced Mary Njeri and her sister Lilian Muhiaki to 10 years in prison after a disciplinary attempt on Njeri’s daughter, Beatrice Wangui, turned fatal.
The sisters allegedly used harsh corporal punishment to correct Wangui’s behavior, resulting in injuries that led to her death. Police recovered her body from the scene, and a postmortem confirmed that she died from the beating.
Beatrice was laid to rest in an emotional ceremony, with family and community members mourning the loss of a child described as energetic and friendly.
The presiding judge noted that what started as a disciplinary action escalated into criminal violence, ultimately causing the girl’s death. The case has reignited discussions about the limits of discipline and child protection in Kenya.
Meanwhile, in Kisii County, police are investigating another tragic case in which two siblings were allegedly killed by their mother. The children were found wrapped in a cloth near their home. The mother has been arrested. The siblings died on January 10, 2026, and were buried on January 19, 2026.
These incidents have sparked nationwide conversations about parenting, child welfare, and the importance of reporting suspected abuse. Authorities continue to urge citizens to report cases of child mistreatment, while support services remain available for families affected by such tragedies.
