Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has responded to recent remarks by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, saying Kenya has no intention of engaging in any form of confrontation with Uganda over access to the Indian Ocean.
Mudavadi dismissed any speculation of tension between the two neighbouring nations, emphasizing that Kenya has always supported Uganda’s economic interests and will continue to do so.
“Kenya will not go to war with Uganda over access to the Indian Ocean. We have been giving them free and safe passage for their goods, and it will continue that way,” Mudavadi stated.
Speaking during a diplomatic briefing, Mudavadi urged East Africans not to misinterpret political rhetoric or exaggerate comments made in public rallies, noting that Kenya and Uganda enjoy one of the longest-standing and most stable bilateral relationships in the region.
He added that the Port of Mombasa and the Northern Corridor remain open for Uganda’s imports and exports, reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to regional cooperation under the East African Community (EAC).
Mudavadi also underscored the importance of unity and diplomacy, saying the region should focus on enhancing trade, easing border operations, and fostering peaceful coexistence rather than fueling unnecessary tensions.
His remarks were widely welcomed by business leaders, regional observers, and citizens who rely on cross-border trade, with many expressing relief that the government had moved quickly to clarify Kenya’s position.
