Joyce Aoko, a 22-year-old Kenyan woman, who was sent back home by the government for medical treatment following an assault incident in Albania, has unfortunately passed away. Aoko’s mother confirmed her death on Monday, February 13, 2023, while she was receiving treatment at the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital (KUTRH).
Aoko was flown back to Kenya from Albania on January 25, 2023, to receive treatment close to her family after her condition worsened. The State Department for Diaspora Affairs organized her repatriation after it was determined that specialized neurological care was not available in Albania. Upon arrival at Wilson Airport, PS of the State Department for Diaspora Affairs Roseline Njogu received Aoko and arranged for her transfer to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) for further treatment.
According to reports, Aoko was attacked by unknown individuals and was found unconscious under the building where she lived in Tirana on August 13, 2022. A police report filed by her neighbor indicated that Aoko had fallen out with a colleague who allegedly sexually assaulted her after dropping her home.
The mother had traveled to Albania on September 12 to see her daughter, but she was in a coma and in poor physical condition. The grieving mother is seeking justice for her daughter and a conclusive report of what truly happened. May Joyce Aoko’s soul rest in peace.
