‘Hawa Watoto Wetu They will make Kenya Great Again’,PLO Lumumba Hails Gen Z for Holding Leaders Accountable

Former Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) boss Prof. PLO Lumumba has praised Kenyans for becoming more vocal in holding leaders accountable. He described this shift as a sign of growing civic awareness.

In an interview aired on a local TV station on Monday, May 12, 2025, Lumumba said Kenyans’ increasing willingness to question authority is reshaping the country’s political space.

Public Awareness Keeping Leaders in Check

Lumumba noted that more citizens are challenging political decisions and demanding accountability.

“We have created an environment where leaders may want to act in certain ways, but they cannot due to public scrutiny,” he said.

He added that although there has been some resistance, the expanding space for human rights has made many in power cautious.

Democracy Depends on Free Expression

The legal expert stressed the importance of free expression for a functioning democracy.

“We’ve become a society that questions leadership, and that’s crucial,” he said.

He warned against attempts to roll back democratic freedoms and called for continued open discussions, saying such dialogue helps the country grow.

Concerns Over Devolution

Prof. Lumumba also expressed concern over the implementation of devolution.

He claimed that efforts to weaken the devolved system are hindering its full potential.

“Devolution has brought change by including marginalized communities, women, and persons with disabilities in national development,” he said.

He urged leaders to protect and strengthen county governments to ensure they serve the people effectively.

Youth-Led Protests Mark a Turning Point

Reflecting on the 2024 protests led by Kenyan youth, Lumumba said the movement marked a major shift in civic engagement.

“Our young people overcame fear, and that is the beginning of true change,” he remarked.

He noted that although the street protests have reduced, the youth continue to engage online and are keeping both government and opposition in check.

“They’ve exposed leaders from all sides, and now those in power know they are being watched,” he said.

Call for Youth to Stay Engaged

Lumumba concluded by encouraging young people to remain active as the country moves toward the 2027 elections.

“What remains is for them to stay organized and continue pushing for accountability,” he advised.
