For seven years, a nine-year-old boy from Mwanganthia Ward in Imenti Central, Meru County, lived a life of isolation inside a poultry-style cage. Identified as Mwiti, the child had reportedly been confined at home since he was about two years old, cut off from normal childhood experiences, social interaction, and proper medical care.
According to his grandmother, the cage was intended to keep him “safe” after he became difficult to manage. However, what may have begun as a misguided attempt at protection resulted in years of neglect. The prolonged isolation left Mwiti weak, malnourished, and deprived of the emotional and developmental support essential for any growing child.
His situation came to public attention after a video showing his condition circulated widely on social media. The disturbing footage sparked outrage and compassion in equal measure, prompting swift intervention from child welfare activists. Supuu O Mioro, a well-known advocate for vulnerable children, led efforts to rescue Mwiti and ensure he received urgent medical care.
The response from the community was overwhelming. Kenyans from different walks of life contributed generously, raising over KSh 1 million to support his medical treatment, therapy, clothing, and basic needs. Prominent figures, including comedian Eric Omondi, joined the cause, amplifying the call for help and mobilizing additional support.
Since his rescue, Mwiti’s progress has been encouraging. With proper nutrition, medical attention, and therapy, he has regained strength and mobility. He is now able to walk, use the toilet independently, and interact more confidently with caregivers. Specialists continue to work closely with him to build his communication and social skills, helping him adjust to a world he had long been separated from.
Plans are underway to place Mwiti at Shalom Children’s Home in Nairobi, where trained professionals will oversee his long-term development, education, and emotional well-being. The structured environment and consistent support are expected to provide him with stability and opportunities he previously lacked.
Mwiti’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of children and the transformative power of compassion and intervention. It also underscores the importance of early care, awareness, and community responsibility in protecting vulnerable children. Even after years of hardship, timely support and love can open the door to healing, growth, and a hopeful future.
