Court clears Kenya’s DJ Joe Mfalme of death Charges of DCI officer

A verdict rendered at the Kibera Law Court on Monday, April 8, 2024, has absolved Joseph Mwendwa, better known as DJ Joe Mfalme, of any wrongdoing related to the demise of a DCI officer.

DJ Joe Mfalme, along with his co-defendants, found themselves before the court subsequent to a 14-day detention by law enforcement as they pursued their inquiry into the incident.

In addition to DJ Joe Mfalme, the individuals arraigned included Allan Ochieng, Eric Gathua, Simon Wanjiru, as well as officers Khadija Abdi Wako, Sammy Rotich, and Agnes Mogoi.

Following a two-week probe, the Director of Public Prosecution, Renson Mulele, proposed that DJ Joe Mfalme and five others become state witnesses. The charges leveled against them pertained to an alleged assault on DCI officer Felix Kelian stationed at Kabete Police.

On March 16, DJ Mfalme and his companions were returning home in Kikuyu when they were involved in a minor traffic incident. According to Frederick Kosen, a police officer attached to DCI Dagoretti, a confrontation ensued post-collision, during which the deceased was reportedly assaulted by Allan, Eric, Simon, and DJ Joe.

Subsequently, news spread like wildfire on March 23 about the arrest of Joe and his entourage, with reports suggesting that they had roughed up Kabete DCIO Felix Kelian, who tragically passed away later.

However, the DPP went a step further by recommending that the primary accused, Allan Ochieng, face murder charges in connection to the deceased senior officer from DCI Dagoretti. The DPP advised that Allan Ochieng should appear at Kiambu Law Court to enter a plea and face charges of murder.
