In the world of academics, a Grade ‘E’ often carries a heavy stigma, branding those who receive it as failures with limited futures. Angela Wamola’s inspiring journey shatters this misconception, proving that grades do not define one’s destiny. Today, she stands as the Head of Strategy and Planning at Safaricom, one of Africa’s leading integrated communications companies.
Born and raised in Nairobi, Angela openly describes herself as the “black sheep” of her family when it came to academics. Struggling with subjects like Math and Physics, she faced significant challenges during her school years. However, her story took an unexpected turn in Form Three when students were asked to select university courses. Influenced by her admiration for her engineer uncle, Angela chose Civil Engineering at the University of Nairobi.
University life was far from easy. With grueling classes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Angela found herself envying friends who had chosen less demanding courses. The struggles with pure Mathematics and Physics left her questioning her decision and contemplating giving up. Yet, her determination and positive attitude became her driving force.
Angela was one of only six women in her engineering class, a fact that further fueled her resolve to succeed. By her third year, she began to find her footing, and what once felt insurmountable became manageable. Reflecting on this experience, Angela shares, “From what I went through, I learned that attitude could make or destroy you.”
In 1999, after five years of relentless effort, Angela graduated with a second upper-class honors degree in Civil Engineering. Her initial passion for roads engineering soon shifted as she adapted to the evolving demands of the job market, steering her career toward IT-related fields.
Angela’s professional journey took a significant leap in 2011 when she joined Safaricom. Starting in IT support, she faced skepticism from male colleagues who doubted her physical capabilities. However, Angela’s unwavering determination and expertise silenced critics as she climbed the ranks. She broke gender barriers by becoming the first senior woman in the core network planning and support department.
Today, as the Head of Strategy and Planning in Safaricom’s technology division, Angela plays a critical role in shaping the company’s core network infrastructure, including voice and data services, the national backbone, and enterprise solutions. Her journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of a positive mindset.
Angela Wamola’s story serves as an inspiration, reminding us that success is not confined by grades but defined by hard work, determination, and a willingness to rise above challenges.
