Nakuru Man Marries Second Wife to ‘Teach a Lesson’, Ends Up Staring at Prison Walls

A Nakuru man who thought he was being clever by marrying a younger second wife to “teach his first wife a lesson” is now narrating his ordeal from behind bars. David Njoroge Chege says what began as a revenge mission ended up destroying his life and costing him his freedom.

According to Njoroge, his marriage to the second wife was never built on love. It started as retaliation after constant disagreements with his first wife. Believing that bringing home a younger woman would intimidate his wife into “behaving,” he took the step without considering the consequences. But instead of restoring peace, the decision opened a door to chaos.

He recalls that the second wife quickly became the source of new problems. Their disagreements escalated over minor issues — even his goats and his bicycle. At one point, she allegedly went to the chief and police claiming he had stolen the very animals he owned. Although he managed to convince authorities that the livestock belonged to him, Njoroge says the trust between them was permanently broken. Fearing that she might falsely accuse him again, he relocated from Free Area to Njoro in an attempt to regain peace.

However, the turbulent relationship did not end. He says the woman later called, claiming that one of her children was unwell. This drew them back together. The quarrels resumed, and she eventually followed him to Njoro, creating scenes and accusing him of being a fugitive.

According to his account, everything took a darker turn one night when police officers stormed his house at around 2am. The second wife was with them and accused him of assaulting one of her children. Njoroge was arrested, charged, and eventually convicted.

What had started as a petty attempt to punish his first wife spiraled into a criminal case that would send him to prison for life — a sentence later reduced to 15 years. From his prison cell, Njoroge now reflects with regret, admitting that marrying another woman out of anger was the worst decision he ever made. The same woman he brought into his life to prove a point, he says, became the catalyst for the events that ultimately took away his freedom.
