Former Harambee Stars and Inter Milan midfielder McDonald Mariga is undeniably one of the best players Kenya has ever produced. The Legendary Midfielder is an elder brother to former Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama who currently plays his soccer in MLS side CF Montreal.
McDonald Mariga played for the Harambee stars from 2003 to 2018 where retired after making 40 appearances scoring 5 goals. Besides that, Mariga boasts to be the first Kenyan and East African footballer to play in the UEFA champions and eventually winning it in 2010 with Inter Milan under the legendary manager Jose Mourinho.
In 2019, Mariga made his debut to politics where he announced he will run for the vacant seat in Kibra Constituency By-Election following the death of incumbent Member of Parliament Ken Okoth who passed away following a long battle with Colon Cancer. However, Mariga’s bid to become Kibra’s Member of Parliament bore no fruits as he lost the elections to Bernard Okoth of ODM.
Away from his political aspirations and football career on the pitch, the 36-year-old remains the first Kenyan to play in La Liga and Serie A. Mariga has a 12-year-old daughter, called Kenisha. Despite trying to keep his family life private, he doesn’t shy off to post her beautiful daughter on his social media platforms.
He was in a relationship with a Rwandese beauty, Ariane Umutoni before they broke up in 2013 with Ariane getting married to Rwandese tycoon in November 2015. Since then, Mariga kept his love life in a lowkey with netizens only seeing him with his daughter Kenisha whom he he frequently describes as, “My love and beautiful princess” .
