why you can get pregnant while breastfeeding-Facts Details Explained

As expectant mothers count down to their due date, many are unaware of the flood of advice that comes after childbirth—some helpful, others based on myths.

“Don’t get pregnant too soon—your milk will dry up!”

“Breastfeeding while pregnant is dangerous!”

Dr. Stella Njenga, an obstetrician-gynaecologist, debunks these common misconceptions.

She says it’s safe to breastfeed during a normal pregnancy unless a woman faces specific medical risks or discomfort. In such cases, doctors may recommend reducing or stopping breastfeeding.

Pregnancy while still breastfeeding is possible. “Breastfeeding may delay ovulation, but it’s not a reliable method of birth control,” Dr Njenga explains. She encourages mums to consider family planning options from as early as six weeks postpartum.

Spacing children is also a personal decision. However, getting pregnant within six months of delivery may lead to complications like preterm birth or low birth weight.

Dr Njenga stresses the importance of a healthy diet for breastfeeding and pregnant mums.

Lastly, she advises new mothers to attend postnatal clinics and avoid relying on unverified advice from friends or family.
