Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has stirred fresh debate after declaring that individuals arrested and charged with treason could be freed if they reveal who financed or influenced their actions.

Speaking during a recent address, President Samia said those implicated in treason-related activities must come forward and disclose the people behind the alleged offenses. According to her, the government’s primary interest is uncovering the masterminds rather than punishing individuals who may have been used as pawns.

“Wale wote waliokamatwa na kushtakiwa kwa kosa la uhaini wakituambia ni nani aliyewalipa, tutawaachilia huru,” she said, emphasizing that cooperation could secure their release.

Her remarks sparked wide reactions across Tanzania and the East African region. Supporters praised the president for taking a strategic approach aimed at exposing political financiers and dismantling networks that threaten national stability. They argued that identifying the sponsors would be more valuable than punishing those who were simply recruited.

However, critics questioned whether the statement could influence ongoing legal processes or pressure suspects into making statements under duress. Others warned that such public declarations might politicize criminal cases that should be handled strictly within the legal framework.

Still, Samia’s message signals a firm stance on national security while also opening the door for suspects to negotiate their freedom by assisting investigations. As public discussion grows, many are waiting to see whether any suspects will take up the offer and what revelations might follow.
