Tito Jackson, an original member of the iconic Jackson 5 and older brother to the legendary Michael Jackson, has passed away at the age of 70. Born as Toriano Adaryll Jackson on October 15, 1953, Tito was the third of the nine Jackson siblings. His death was officially announced on September 15, 2024.
Preliminary reports suggest that Tito suffered a heart attack while traveling from New Mexico to Oklahoma. His sons—Taryll, Taj, and TJ Jackson—released a heartfelt statement expressing their deep sorrow, saying they were “shocked, saddened, and heartbroken” by their father’s passing. They described Tito as a caring and compassionate man, adding:
“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson, is no longer with us. We are shocked, saddened, and heartbroken. Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being. Some of you may know him as Tito Jackson from the legendary Jackson 5, some as ‘Coach Tito,’ or as ‘Poppa T.’ Nevertheless, he will be missed tremendously. It will forever be ‘Tito Time’ for us. Please remember to do what our father always preached, and that is to love one another. Love you, Pops. Your boys.”
Tito was an essential part of the success of the Jackson 5, whose 1970s hits like “ABC,” “I Want You Back,” and “I’ll Be There” became timeless classics. The group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 for their significant contribution to pop music. Though he initially played guitar in the background, Tito later stepped into the spotlight with a solo career, releasing albums like Tito Time in 2016 and Under Your Spell in 2021. His solo work featured collaborations with music legends such as George Benson and Stevie Wonder, showcasing his deep love for funk and blues.
Tito continued performing with his brothers in The Jacksons, sharing the stage with Jackie and Marlon in recent years. The Jackson 5’s influence on music history is undeniable, and Tito’s role as the band’s lead guitarist was critical to their early success. His smooth guitar tones formed the foundation of many of their biggest hits.
Despite the many challenges the Jackson family has faced, including the tragic loss of Michael Jackson in 2009, Tito remained a prominent figure in both music and family life. Even in his later years, he maintained a strong presence on stage. Just days before his passing, he was performing with The Jacksons in Surrey, England, and had additional shows planned for 2024.
Tito’s untimely death marks another significant loss for the Jackson family and the world of music. His influence, both as a member of the legendary Jackson 5 and as a solo artist, will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
