Stephen Mukangai, a celebrated sports commentator and journalist in Kenya, has carved out a successful career with Standard Media Group. But behind his current success lies a powerful story of resilience and perseverance.
Born in the quiet village of Namshiya in Malava, Kakamega County, Mukangai began his academic journey at Namsiya Primary School before advancing to the well-regarded Ingotse High School. After completing his secondary education, he pursued his passion for journalism at Multimedia University of Kenya.
Life took a tough turn when he moved to Nairobi in 2008. Fresh out of high school, Mukangai described his early experiences in the city as “hellish.” With limited resources and no clear path, he was forced to take up odd jobs just to make ends meet. Living in the Kibera slums, he even cleaned toilets to afford basic necessities like food and rent.
Yet, Mukangai’s determination never wavered. He later found work in the construction industry, engaging in mjengo (manual labor) for about six months. The unpredictable nature of the work often meant going to bed hungry, but he remained focused on his dream.
Eventually, with enough savings, Mukangai moved to Mlango Kubwa. There, he made a bold move—visiting the offices of Standard Media Group with hopes of meeting the esteemed presenter Hassan Mwana wa Ali. Although his first attempt didn’t bear fruit, his persistence paid off. Hassan reached out to him for a second meeting, which would prove to be life-changing. Impressed by Mukangai’s passion, Hassan offered him a co-hosting opportunity.
Mukangai’s big break came in 2010 when he made his debut on air, analyzing a match between Ulinzi Stars and Red Berets. From that moment on, his career took off. With a natural flair for sports analysis and an in-depth understanding of the game, he quickly rose through the ranks to become a top sports journalist at Standard Media.
Today, Mukangai is not only respected in the sports media industry but is also reportedly earning between Ksh.300,000 and Ksh.400,000 per month—a testament to how far he has come from his days of hardship. His journey reflects not just professional success, but also the power of grit and determination in the face of adversity.
Stephen Mukangai’s story is more than a personal triumph—it’s an inspiration to anyone chasing a dream against all odds.
