On February 20, 2023, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) apprehended a 38-year-old man who is believed to have shot and killed Lilian Waithera in Nairobi. According to a senior police officer who spoke to the press, the suspect has denied any involvement in the murder.
Despite owning a licensed rifle in Nairobi, the suspect claims that he left the weapon in his car and did not carry it with him. He also refutes allegations of being present in the building where the shooting occurred around 5:00 pm.
The suspect reportedly stated that he did not go up any floors in the building and instead placed the rifle in his car before leaving the area. Authorities have seized the firearm believed to have been used in the crime for further examination to determine whether it was the one used to kill Waithera.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled to his hometown in Kenol where he remained for nearly a week before detectives apprehended him.
