Shock has engulfed Sega town in Siaya County after a respected teacher couple tragically lost their lives in an electricity accident at their residence.
The victims were identified as Meshack Ongulo and his wife, Modesta Mwakali, both teachers well known in the region.
The incident happened on the night of Monday, August 18, leaving neighbours and colleagues in deep sorrow.
According to North Ugenya Location Chief George Francis Osoro, the tragedy struck when Modesta went into the bathroom and accidentally touched a live electric cable.
She collapsed instantly, unable to call for help.
Her husband, who was brushing his teeth nearby, rushed in to rescue her but was also fatally electrocuted.
Chief Osoro explained that at around 7am he received a call from one of the security men informing him that an incident had occurred the previous night at a plot known as Leonadus Bar and Restaurant along the highway.
He said he was told that some tenants had been struck by electricity and died.
Neighbours who had heard screams rushed into the compound, only to find the couple lying lifeless.
Police officers later visited the scene and moved the bodies to a private mortuary in Sega town.
The couple, who had young children, have left behind a grieving family and community.
Residents described them as hard-working and dedicated educators whose sudden deaths were a heavy blow.
Chief Osoro urged landlords and homeowners to ensure proper wiring in their properties to avoid similar tragedies.
He appealed for calm as the community mourns and advised landlords to regularly inspect electric lines to prevent further losses, noting that the deceased had left behind very young children.
